Care Sheet Chinchillas have an inquisitive and gentle nature. They also have a lot of energy and love to run, jump and climb. They need a large habitat that allows them to play. Chinchillas need supervised playtime outside of the cage on a daily basis. Average Size: 12 inches long Life Span: Up to 15—20+ years with proper care Diet: High quality chinchilla pellets and timothy hay should be provided at all times. Fresh or dried vegetables may be given in small amounts. Chinchillas love raisins and can be given 1 or 2 a week. Note: Vegetables and fruit of any sort as a treats for chinchillas is currently controversial. Many believe that these are an unhealthy treats. Other treat options include: rose hips, oatmeal (not quick or instant), 1/2 a shredded wheat square (no frosting), or a plain cheerio. Treats should note exceed 10% of the daily intake of food. Clean, fresh, water should be available at all times and changed daily. DO NOT feed chocolate, caffeine or alcohol as these may cause serious medical problems. Housing: Chinchillas do well in household temperatures, not to exceed 75 degrees F. Be careful of extreme temperature changes. Keep the cage out of direct sun light and drafts. The environment should be quiet enough to allow for daytime rest. A large multi-tiered cage is recommended since chinchillas love to jump and play. Wire cages with a solid bottom are best. The spaces between the wires should not exceed 1 inch. Cages with plastic ramps, shelves, pans and sides should be avoided. Chinchillas will eat the plastic. The cage should be placed away from electrical cords and outlets or any other item that could be chewed. 1 – 1 1/2 inches of bedding should be placed in the cage. Proper bedding includes kiln dried pine or aspen shavings, pelletted, or recycled products. Never use cedar products or other aromatic woods since they can cause respiratory problems in chinchillas. Never house chinchillas with other small animals.
